An intaglio of Osiris-Canopus on Roman agate facing left. The canopic jar with Osiris’ head wearing a horned atef crown. The border is hatched.
Osiris-Canopus was named after the ancient Egyptian coastal city of Canopus, where Osiris was adored in the form of a jar with a human head. The jar could represent the wealth brought by Nile water or it could be derived from a reliquary form.
During the Ptolemaic and Roam periods, priests carried Osiris-Canopus jars during processions in the cult of Isis.
