Roman gold ring with mounted niccolo intaglio

A roman niccolo intaglio mounted in an ancient gold ring.
Bust of Jupiter Serapis with inscriptions.
The face is turned to the left and characterised by a draped bust, thick beard and wearing a modius (headdress).
Behind the head of Jupiter Serapis are letters: V-TP (in diphthong?).

Jupiter Serapis was a god who combined elements of Egyptian, Greek and Roman deities. This niccolo shows him dressed as a Greek man and wearing a ‘modius’ grain basket on his head.
