Beautiful mortar carved from a solid blood red marble block blood from Northern Italy.
On the surface of each of the four handles is carved a flower-like design.
Mortars were used in the kitchens of grand chateaux or in apothecaries by pharmacists to crush the herbs into powder for medicinal purposes.
