Superb onyx intaglio portraying a sphinx in a reclining position, clutching a small object between her forepaws and with her head lifted.

Sphinxes are prominent throughout classical mythology, given the fact that the Great Sphinx of Giza is probably the most well-known. This is probably due to the historical interaction between Egyptian and Classical cultures through trading routes across the Mediterranean. Unlike the male Egyptian sphinx, the classical sphinx has the body of a lioness, the wings of an eagle, the head of a human female, and the tail of a serpent.
